No spelling or grammar help
Spellcheck, autocorrect, predictive text and word suggestions are all switched off in the editor.
A strict, distraction-free place for candidates to type their exam answers. Invigilators stay in control of every step, from setup to the printed script.

How it works
Candidates type. Invigilators control everything else, protected by a session PIN.
Before
Enter the centre number, candidate name and number, and component code. Set a PIN and confirm the device checks.
During
Work autosaves as the candidate types. If the app is left for any reason, the answer is hidden until the PIN is entered.
At the end
The invigilator enters the PIN to submit. The script becomes read-only and can’t be reopened for editing.
After
Print with the candidate present, record that they’ve checked it, then clear the iPad for the next candidate.
The strict editor
Spellcheck, autocorrect, predictive text and word suggestions are all switched off in the editor.
Pasting and any multi-character insertion are blocked, and the text-selection menu, lookup and data detection are disabled.
Home screen, Control Centre, a notification or a restart: the answer is hidden and typing stops until the invigilator’s PIN is entered.
Saved as the candidate types and every 15 seconds, encrypted with AES-256 and stored only on the iPad.
The only editing tools are undo and redo. There are no menus to explore and nowhere else to go.
Landscape, full-screen iPad layout for use with an external keyboard. Works with Guided Access and Single App Mode.
Classroom mode
Students open classroom mode themselves and type in the same strict editor they’ll use on exam day. Their work is saved on the iPad, ready to finish next lesson or print for marking.
Printing
ExamType lays out every page itself, so the script prints the same way on any AirPrint printer and no text is ever cut off.
Your setup
No app can lock down a whole device by itself. Here’s what ExamType handles, and what your centre needs to set up.
Our centre checklist walks through every step. It covers configuring the iPad, the tests to run before your first live exam, and what to check before each candidate. Open the centre checklist →

FAQ
No. JCQ doesn’t approve or certify software. ExamType is built around the published requirements for word-processed scripts, and your centre stays responsible for checking its full setup against current JCQ and awarding-body instructions.
ExamType has no browser, links, accounts or online content, and blocks pasting. Stopping candidates from leaving the app, and turning off internet access, is done in iPadOS with Guided Access or Single App Mode. The centre checklist explains how.
The work is already saved and encrypted on the iPad. When ExamType reopens, the answer stays hidden until the invigilator enters the session PIN, and the interruption is recorded in the session log.
There’s deliberately no back door, so a session can’t be unlocked without its PIN. Write the PIN down and keep it with the exam paperwork until the session has been cleared.
No. Names, candidate numbers and answers are encrypted and stored only on the iPad. We have no servers that receive them. Clearing a session deletes it from the device permanently.
Not at the moment. ExamType is a strict word processor with all spelling and grammar help turned off, so don’t use it for arrangements that need a spellchecker, a computer reader or speech recognition.
Only through a normal App Store update. ExamType never downloads code by itself. Pause app updates with your device management during exam season, so candidates use the version you tested.
Any iPad that runs a current version of iPadOS. Check the App Store listing for the minimum version. We recommend using an external keyboard, as candidates would with any exam word processor.
